Midlife & Beyond, Made Joyful
Honest style, wellbeing and life chats from Lucy (the daughter, deep in midlife) and Isobel (her mum, deep in retirement). For women in their 40s, 60s, 70s, and all the messy, joyful bits in between. We don’t have a five-step plan. We have two.
Nice to meet you both!
Hi, we’re Lucy & Isobel
A daughter in the thick of midlife and a mum in the thick of retirement, blogging about the whole joyful, slightly ridiculous lot. Mostly in elasticated waistbands.

Lucy, the daughter
Countryside-dwelling, slow-moving, happily-a-bit-of-a-hermit
In my 30s, my wardrobe was basically animal print and denim. Now I’m in my 40s, with greying hair, hormonal chaos and a brain that occasionally forgets which of my children is which (sorry, kids).
I live in the countryside, in a house I love, at a pace my family have nicknamed me for: Haysloth. Part slow-talker, part laid-back, part doing-things-at-a-glacial-pace (and yes, partly my actual name). If I didn’t see another human for a week, I’d probably be quietly thrilled.
I write honestly about style, hormones, energy, clutter, friendships and identity. The small, unglamorous things that are actually helping me feel like myself again.
No 5am routines. No “bounce back” pressure. Just midlife, done kindly (and slightly chaotically).
Isobel, the mum
Town-dwelling, diary-always-full, sewing machine always on
I’m Lucy’s mum. I’ve done the work years, raised the children (one of whom now writes about me on the internet), and I’m firmly in the bit nobody really writes about: retired life, with all its lunches, choir practices, hospital appointments and unexpected free Tuesdays.
I live in town, where I can walk to almost everything (and almost everyone). My diary is usually fuller than it was when I was working. Lucy hides in the countryside in her own glorious bubble; I’m the one popping out for a coffee, a catch-up and probably a charity shop on the way home.
I’m fairly new to making my own clothes - it’s a new venture, and I’m learning as I go. I hunt down the best bits in charity shops, and firmly believe a good outfit and a better cup of tea can fix most things. I’ll be sharing all of it here, including the mishaps (I once sewed a pair of trousers up the wrong way - proves my point!).
Style on a pension, joy on a Tuesday.

Lucy writes from the thick of midlife. Isobel writes from the other side of it. Different decades, same blog, occasional disagreements about hemlines.
Start here if…
For the midlife middle
Style · Hormones · Home · Mind
- You’re in your 40s or early 50s
- You’re juggling work, kids, hormones and a brain that won’t sit still
- You want comfort‑first style, perimenopause honesty and a calmer home
Start here if…
For the bit that comes after
Handmade · Charity finds · Retired life
- You’re retired, semi‑retired, or eyeing it up
- You love a charity shop rummage and a well‑made frock
- You want real stories about retired life: lunches, choir, hospital car parks, joy
Can’t decide? Read both. We’re biased, but we promise it’s worth it.

What Mum writes about
Handmade frocks, charity shop wins and the honest texture of retired life, written from a few decades further down the road (and, frankly, a much nicer chair).
Handmade & Me-Made
Dresses, blouses and bits and pieces I’ve sewn myself. Patterns I love, fabrics that wash well, and what actually fits a 70-something figure (spoiler: not what the pattern envelope promised).

Charity Shop Finds
The week’s best rummages: what I bought, what I paid, and how I’d style it. Proof that the best wardrobes don’t come from the high street, and rarely cost more than lunch.

Retired Life, Properly Lived

The Reset You Need in Midlife When You Don’t Feel Like Yourself Anymore
26 June 2026
If you’ve landed here because you feel tired in your bones, a bit weepy for no reason, slightly puffy in places you didn’t used to be puffy, and you’re waking up at 3am like it’s your new hobby… welcome. You’re not broken. You’re not doing midlife wrong. You’re just living through a very full season […]
Tired All the Time? 7 Small Habits That Helped Me Get My Energy Back
26 June 2026
There’s “a bit tired”, and then there’s that bone‑deep, dragging‑yourself‑around kind of tired. The kind where you wake up exhausted, move through the day in a fog, and by 4pm you feel about 200 years old. Your body aches, your brain is jittery, and you’re running on caffeine, willpower and sheer obligation. That was me. […]
Perimenopause 101: The Symptoms No One Warned Us About
26 June 2026
There’s this weird gap in women’s health where you go from “period chat at school” to “hot flushes and HRT”. And nobody really explains the messy middle bit. That messy middle has a name: perimenopause. For a lot of us, it doesn’t arrive with a big dramatic fanfare. It creeps in quietly. One day you’re […]

I made a career pivot at 40+ (and I’m shit-scared)
22 June 2026
Why does this midlife career pivot feel so weird? I’ve recently shifted my energy away from the kind of work I was doing before (I was/am a SaaS marketing/operations director) and into something more creative and hands-on. And I didn’t expect the emotional whiplash. On paper, it looks like a positive change. I’m leaning into […]
The Best UK High Street Brands for Grown-Up Women
27 April 2026
If you’re trying to shop the high street as a grown-up woman, you’ll know the brief: clothes that fit properly, feel good, last more than five minutes, and don’t make you feel like you’re dressing for someone else’s life. To make this guide a little more useful (and easy to skim), I’ve added quick scores […]
The Midlife Style Reset. Here’s How to Love Your Wardrobe Again at 40+
22 April 2026
There’s a special kind of midlife chaos that happens in your wardrobe. A few pre‑kids going out tops that don’t quite zip up. Workwear from an office you haven’t stepped into since 2020. Leggings that have seen more school runs than yoga classes. And somewhere in the middle of all that… you. If getting dressed […]
